Abstract
Multi-purpose shopping centers in Tehran have experienced significant growth in the past two decades. The production of these spaces has not been immune to the influence of social and political forces. The prevailing conditions in each period of time have sometimes led to one force dominating over another in the construction of these centers. The aim of this research is to investigate the factors that lead to the intervention of social and political forces in shaping the multi-purpose shopping centers of Tehran. The research method of this article is qualitative, and its data has been collected through interviews with urban experts in the academic and executive fields specializing in urban planning, sociology, and political economy. The technique of thematic analysis has been used to analyze the presence of these forces. The results indicate that factors such as government facilitation and enabling, urban management facilitation (municipality and city council), actors, and urban infrastructure have influenced the nature of intervention of these forces, and the impact of these factors has also had consequences
