Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the levels of social identity of adolescents and analyze the effects of social media on their social identity from the perspective of a social work. In this research, descriptive-analytical method has been used. The sample consisted of 384 adolescents (boys and girls) in the secondary stage depending on the age group (18-14 years) in Ahvaz. The research questionnaire is designed based on the four main levels of James Marcia's theory of social identity. The results showed that there are 1 to 4 dimensions of the effects of social media on the social identity of adolescents on the dimensions: "closure - dispersion - postponement - achievement". Also, these effects on variables such as: age, gender, level of use and duration of respondents' use of social networks were significant, but no relationship was observed between the type of social network used and the effect on the identity of social users. Therefore, it is necessary to take serious measures by the family, the school to care for adolescents for the negative effects of social media on adolescents' social identity.
