Abstract

Violence has been present among people across the history.  It is justified partly by physical superiority of men to act violently against women. However, the emergence of some new variables, such as change in family structure as well as the improvement of women's status in society, has changed the situation recently. In general, culture plays the main role in reducing violence against women and where it is silent the rate of the violence goes up. The false interpretation of religious believes, patriarchy, discrimination, etc, are factors which increasing the violence.
Women from Tehran have experienced the violence. Moreover, a research shows that the rate of the violence among them is higher than the average of the country. This higher average is mostly related to their understanding of violence against women. That is to say, one certain act in other part of the country may mean as a nonviolent act while it could mean violence in Tehran. In most part of the country violence merely means a physical behavior while in Tehran people take bad words and speeches as a kind of violence. This essay surveys some books and articles on "violence against women" and puts this together with a survey carried on in Tehran and analyzes the female experience of violence.
